Reports and opinions

Nexus opinions

A written psychological opinion about whether a mental health condition is linked to military service or another service-connected condition.

01 / WHEN IT MAY FIT

What this service can help answer.

A VA mental health nexus opinion answers a defined relationship question: whether a current condition may be directly related to military service, caused by a service-connected condition, or aggravated by one. A responsible opinion considers diagnosis, chronology, relevant records, conflicting information, and plausible alternative explanations. Its value comes from the clinical rationale, not a template or promised phrase. For a fuller definition, read what a VA nexus letter is.

  • A current condition may be directly related to military service.
  • A service-connected condition may have caused another mental health condition.
  • A service-connected condition may have made another condition worse.
  • A prior opinion did not clearly explain its reasoning.

02 / WHAT IT INCLUDES

A clear scope before work begins.

Before work begins, the relationship question, relevant evidence, need for an evaluation, agreed deliverable, and fee are confirmed. Dr. Bell’s conclusion follows the evidence rather than a requested outcome, and limitations or missing information are stated when they affect the analysis. See how the evaluation and report process works.

03 / SCOPE

What this service covers.

This service can address one direct, secondary, or aggravation question within psychology and explain how supporting and conflicting evidence affect the opinion. It cannot supply facts that are not in the record, decide the claim, or assign a VA rating. If the question is still unclear or prior opinions disagree, begin with a records and prior-opinion review.

Included in the scope

  • Address direct service connection, secondary cause, or aggravation
  • Explain how the evidence leads to the opinion
  • Discuss supporting and conflicting information
  • State when the question cannot be answered with confidence

Outside this scope

  • Turn an unsupported fact into proof
  • Assign a rating or decide the claim
  • Answer a relationship question without enough clinical facts
