Secondary mental health conditions

A secondary question asks whether one condition caused or made another condition worse. The first condition may be mental or physical.

01 / KNOW THIS FIRST

A condition may cause another condition.

It may also make an existing condition worse.

Timing matters, but timing alone is not enough.

Research must be tied to the veteran’s facts.

02 / HOW A PSYCHOLOGIST THINKS ABOUT IT

Mental health may affect mental health.

A veteran who is already service connected for PTSD or depression may later have insomnia, anxiety, alcohol problems, or another condition. The clinician asks whether the conditions are separate, part of one condition, caused by one another, or worsened by one another.

A medical condition may affect mental health.

Pain, tinnitus, a sleep disorder, TBI, and other medical problems may affect mood, worry, sleep, and daily function. The evaluation must still study the veteran’s timeline, other causes, and current findings.

Research adds context—not an automatic answer.

A study may show that two conditions often occur together. It does not prove what happened for one veteran. A useful opinion explains how the research fits the actual history and records.
