Mental health and occupational functioning

A job title does not show what a person can do at work. An occupational-functioning evaluation explains how mental health symptoms affect basic work tasks.

01 / KNOW THIS FIRST

Work function is more than employed or unemployed.

Specific tasks and patterns matter.

A psychologist does not conduct a labor-market study.

VA makes the TDIU decision.

02 / HOW A PSYCHOLOGIST THINKS ABOUT IT

Which work functions may be affected?

Symptoms may affect attendance, focus, pace, memory, task completion, interactions, stress tolerance, and the ability to adjust to change.

  • Getting to work and staying there
  • Following steps and finishing tasks
  • Working near other people
  • Handling feedback, pressure, or change

What makes the evidence useful?

Clear examples help. Missed days, errors, extra breaks, conflict, reduced pace, special help, and failed work attempts may show how symptoms work in a real setting.

Where does the scope stop?

A psychologist can explain mental health symptoms and their work effects. This is not a vocational opinion, labor-market survey, fitness-for-duty exam, or legal ruling on TDIU.
