Areas of focus

Diagnostic clarification: when symptoms overlap

Poor sleep, low focus, irritability, memory trouble, and worry can come from more than one condition. Diagnostic clarification asks what best explains the full pattern.

01 / KNOW THIS FIRST

Many conditions share symptoms.

A symptom may have more than one cause.

Some effects can be separated; some cannot.

Uncertainty should be explained, not hidden.

02 / HOW A PSYCHOLOGIST THINKS ABOUT IT

Why can diagnosis be hard?

PTSD, depression, anxiety, TBI, sleep disorders, substance use, pain, medicine effects, and medical illness may look alike in daily life. A short symptom list may not show which condition is driving the problem.

Can the symptoms or effects be separated?

Sometimes the records and exam show a clear split. Other times the symptoms overlap too much. The clinician should explain what can be linked to each condition and say when a reliable split cannot be made. This evaluation examines which symptoms can be distinguished between documented TBI and mental health conditions, and explains when the available evidence does not allow a reliable distinction. This is not a neurological examination, comprehensive neuropsychological testing or a VA TBI examination.

What does Dr. Bell use?

Dr. Bell compares the timeline, records, interview, testing when useful, treatment response, and other possible causes. The answer may confirm one diagnosis, identify more than one, or explain why the evidence remains mixed.
