Claims education

What is a mental health C&P exam?

VA may order a Compensation and Pension exam when it needs more medical information about a claim. Most people call it a C&P exam or claim exam.

01 / KNOW THIS FIRST

VA asks for the exam.

The exam has a set claim question.

The report becomes part of the record.

VA looks at the whole record when it decides the claim.

02 / HOW A PSYCHOLOGIST THINKS ABOUT IT

Why did VA order the exam?

VA may need more facts about diagnosis, the link to service, current symptoms, or daily and work effects.

  • Is a condition present?
  • Is it linked to service or another condition?
  • How severe is it now?
  • How does it affect life and work?

What may happen?

The examiner may review records, ask about your history, discuss symptoms, and complete a DBQ or medical opinion. The visit may feel brief or formal. Length alone does not show whether the report will help or hurt.

What should you focus on?

Be honest and specific. Explain how often a symptom happens, how strong it is, how long it lasts, and what it changes in your day. You do not need to perform or guess the right answer.
