What is a VA nexus letter?

A nexus letter is a medical opinion. It explains whether a current condition is linked to military service or to another service-connected condition.

01 / KNOW THIS FIRST

Nexus means connection.

The opinion should answer one clear question.

Facts and reasoning matter more than a special phrase.

VA reviews the opinion with the rest of the record.

02 / HOW A PSYCHOLOGIST THINKS ABOUT IT

What question does it answer?

The question may be whether a condition began in service. It may ask whether one service-connected condition caused or made another condition worse.

  • What condition is present?
  • What event or condition may be linked to it?
  • Does the full record support that link?

What makes an opinion useful?

A useful opinion is about you. It names the records reviewed. It explains the timeline. It also explains how the facts lead to the answer.

  • A clear question
  • Accurate facts
  • Clinical findings
  • A reasoned answer
  • Limits or missing facts

Research helps. It is not a magic wand.

Research can show that two problems are often related. It cannot prove what caused one veteran’s condition. The clinician must connect the research to your history and records.
