IMO, nexus letter, DBQ, or C&P exam?

These terms describe different parts of the evidence. One evaluation may lead to more than one kind of report.

01 / KNOW THIS FIRST

C&P exam: an exam VA asks for.

DBQ: a set VA form.

Nexus letter: a relationship opinion.

IMO: an independent medical opinion.

02 / HOW A PSYCHOLOGIST THINKS ABOUT IT

C&P exam

VA orders this exam. The examiner gathers facts and may complete a DBQ or opinion. VA uses the report with the rest of the record.

DBQ

A Disability Benefits Questionnaire is a standard form. It records diagnosis, symptoms, and other findings for a condition. It may not answer a cause or relationship question.

Nexus letter or IMO

A nexus letter focuses on a link. An IMO can answer that question or another defined medical question. The label matters less than the facts, clinical work, and reasoning inside the report.
